City Park

Couturie Forest

The Couturie Forest, located within City Park, is a 60-acre haven from the stress and bustle of city life. Couturie Forest, while not the most extensive of these New Orleans walks, is worth a visit if you want to escape the crowds. View wildlife, have a picnic by the river, or take a stroll along one of the many woodland routes that branch off the main circle.

Louis Armstrong Park

This 31-acre haven features gazebos, trails, and, of course, the namesake park, where you can relax and take in the incredible sites that surround you. Bayou Sauvage

The 23,000-acre refuge is home to a variety of habitats, including hardwood forest, scrub/shrub, fresh marsh, and tidal marsh. Bring your hiking binoculars if you want to go bird-watching! The 34-mile boardwalk features informative signs that identify native tree species as well as data about the ecology. After finishing the short boardwalk loop, continue down the crushed-stone levee route for more opportunities to see birds and other wildlife.

Audubon Park

Audubon Park is one of the finest hiking trails in New Orleans. Not only will you get a great workout, but you’ll also be able to enjoy the beauty of the Garden District. The park is home to many majestic live oak trees and well-kept gardens, as well as a peaceful lagoon. You can walk or bike along a 1.9-mile paved path that circumnavigates the park, which is great for getting some exercise in the fresh air. Also, there’s a network of dirt trails that branch off from the main loop and crisscross throughout this beautiful park.

Tickfaw State Park

Tickfaw State Park is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts because of its four different ecosystems. The swamp-like cypress and tupelo can be viewed from the park’s 4.5 miles of boardwalks and trails. Visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of a bottomland hardwood forest, a mixed pine/hardwood forest, or the Tickfaw River. If you’ve walked all 4.5 miles, rent a canoe to enjoy the river up close. There are also cabins for rent on-site if you don’t want to camp and can’t get back to your hotel by nightfall.

Jean Lafitte National Park

Although 30 minutes outside of the city, this national park has six sites scattered across south Louisiana. Each visit will be distinctively unique, with the everchanging nature and animals that call this national park home. Great for gator sightings and bird fanatics, you never know who you’ll end up meeting on your hike at Jean Lafitte. Jean Lafitte National Park is a great place to go for a day trip if you’re looking for something fun and unique to do in the New Orleans area. It’s only thirty minutes from the city, but once you’re there, you’ll find yourself surrounded by water and wildlife.

City Park Botanical Gardens

Visit the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park if you enjoy being surrounded by nature and plants. This exhibit, set over 10 acres, displays over 2,000 plants from around the world and offers something unique no matter what time of year you visit. The Enrique Alferez Sculpture Garden is also located in the Botanical Gardens. Alferez was a New Orleans sculptor who worked from the 1930s until the late 1990s, and this park honors his work.
